Have Insurance Requirements From a Client?
Send us the insurance requirements from your contract, lease, vendor agreement, or licensing agency. A KTL commercial insurance specialist will review the requirements and help determine the coverage, limits, and endorsements you need.
Virginia workers’ compensation: more than two employees
Virginia generally requires workers’ compensation when an employer regularly employs more than two employees, including part-time and full-time staff. The count is not limited to the people on your direct payroll: qualifying subcontractors’ employees can count when performing your trade or business or fulfilling your contract, even if the subcontractor has its own insurance. A small contractor can therefore cross the threshold without hiring a third direct employee. Review the Workers’ Compensation Commission’s guidance before assuming you are exempt.
Working in Virginia from another state
Virginia requires appropriate Virginia workers’ compensation coverage for work performed in the state, including temporary operations. An out-of-state policy may need a Virginia endorsement; do not assume an other-states clause meets every requirement. Tell KTL where your employees work, how long assignments last and whether subcontractors will perform the work so the proposed coverage can be checked before the job starts.
Consultants, marketing agencies and contract liability
Northern Virginia professional firms and digital agencies should compare professional liability for covered advice or project errors, media coverage for content-related claims and cyber for sensitive records and client credentials. Customer agreements may demand higher limits or specific endorsements, but contract language is not proof that the policy covers every contractual promise. Review guarantees of results, indemnification clauses and cyber crime sublimits before signing.
Home care and contractor programs in Virginia
For home care, disclose whether services are non-medical or skilled, caregiver payroll, patient contact, employee driving and protected records. The program may need professional liability, abuse-related coverage, hired and non-owned auto and cyber in addition to GL and workers’ compensation. Contractors should review subcontractor certificates, completed operations, tools and equipment, auto and additional-insured wording. A client’s certificate request should be checked against the policy, not used to promise coverage that is absent.
Virginia auto limits and coastal property
Virginia’s general motor-vehicle liability minimums for policies effective on or after January 1, 2025 are $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. Those are legal minimums, not recommended commercial limits; contracts, motor carriers and specialized operations can need more. Review business use and employee driving separately. Hampton Roads and other coastal property risks also warrant a review of wind deductibles, flood coverage and interruption exposure, since flood is commonly excluded from standard property policies.
Get comparable Virginia premiums, not a teaser price
Provide your operations, revenue, payroll and employee count, subcontractor details, vehicles, losses and client requirements. KTL compares policy limits, covered work, exclusions, deductibles and endorsements alongside the premium. An owner-only consultant and a contractor using subcontractors have different coverage triggers and cannot be priced accurately with one statewide average. Share your current declarations when renewing so the comparison does not quietly remove valuable coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Does Virginia require workers’ compensation for three employees?
Generally yes: the threshold is regularly employing more than two employees, including part-time employees. Qualifying subcontractor employees can also count, so verify the full count rather than look only at direct payroll.
Do insured subcontractors still count toward Virginia’s threshold?
They can. The Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission says qualifying subcontractors’ employees count even when the subcontractor has its own insurance. Review whether they are performing your trade or business or fulfilling your contract.
Does my out-of-state workers’ comp policy cover a Virginia job?
Do not assume it does. Virginia requires appropriate coverage for work in the state, including temporary work, and your policy may need a Virginia endorsement.
Is the Virginia auto minimum enough for a business contract?
Not necessarily. The general 50/100/25 minimum applies to policies effective from January 1, 2025; client contracts and specialized commercial operations may require higher limits or different coverage.
Can KTL quote Virginia businesses remotely?
Yes. KTL is based in Del Mar, California and licensed in Virginia. We handle coverage comparisons and service by phone and email without claiming a Virginia office.
