Have Insurance Requirements From a Client?
Send us the insurance requirements from your contract, lease, vendor agreement, or licensing agency. A KTL commercial insurance specialist will review the requirements and help determine the coverage, limits, and endorsements you need.
Build a Utah insurance program around your work
Start with your operations, not a package name. General liability covers eligible third-party bodily injury and property damage, while professional liability addresses covered service errors. Cyber responds to covered cyber incidents and data exposure. A business owner policy may bundle GL and property for eligible firms, but it does not automatically include professional liability, cyber or workers’ compensation. Check each coverage separately when a client asks for proof of insurance.
Utah workers’ compensation and owner waivers
Utah generally requires coverage for an employer regularly employing one or more workers. Certain owner-only businesses and officers may qualify for exclusions or a Workers’ Compensation Coverage Waiver, depending on entity structure and eligibility. A waiver is not an insurance policy and does not protect an injured employee. Check the Utah Labor Commission’s guidance before using a waiver, adding staff or assuming a subcontractor’s paperwork removes your own responsibility.
Cyber and professional liability for Utah agencies
Marketing agencies, IT consultants and technology firms often hold client website credentials, advertising accounts or confidential customer data. Review professional liability for project mistakes, media liability for content claims and cyber for breach response, ransomware and business interruption. Social-engineering and funds-transfer fraud can have separate sublimits or conditions. Multi-factor authentication, backups and a clear client contract help underwriting, but do not eliminate every exposure.
Utah contractors and home care employers
Contractors should coordinate general liability, completed operations, equipment, commercial auto and workers’ compensation with their trade, licensing category and GC agreements. Home care agencies should accurately disclose skilled versus non-medical services, caregiver payroll, driving and patient records. Review professional liability, abuse-related coverage, hired and non-owned auto and cyber rather than assume a basic GL policy meets a payer or referral partner’s contract.
Business driving, snow and equipment
Deliveries and other business driving may require a commercial policy or a specific endorsement; personal auto should not be assumed to cover the operation. Utah businesses with employee vehicles should also discuss hired and non-owned auto. For property and job-site equipment, review theft, seasonal operations, snow-related losses, deductibles and business interruption. Earthquake and flood are commonly separate coverage decisions rather than automatic additions to a standard property policy.
What determines a Utah business insurance quote?
Premium depends on services, revenue, employee duties and payroll, claims, vehicles, location and selected limits. Owner-only consulting and a business with field employees should not be compared using one advertised starting price. Share your declarations and client requirements so KTL can compare the same limits, deductibles, retroactive dates and endorsements. Recheck payroll and subcontractor documentation before renewal and any workers’ compensation audit.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Utah LLC need workers’ compensation?
Entity type alone does not answer the question. Employers generally need coverage when regularly employing one or more workers. Some eligible owner-only entities can seek a waiver or exclusion through the Utah Labor Commission; confirm eligibility before relying on one.
Does general liability cover a Utah agency’s marketing mistakes?
Not as a substitute for professional liability. Covered service-error claims belong under an appropriate professional liability policy, while cyber incidents and media claims need their own coverage review.
Can I use personal auto for business deliveries in Utah?
Do not assume so. The Utah Insurance Department warns that business use can require commercial coverage or an endorsement. Tell the insurer exactly how the vehicle is used.
How can I compare Utah insurance prices fairly?
Compare identical limits, deductibles, covered services, endorsements and exclusions. Include workers’ compensation, professional liability and cyber when needed; a cheaper GL-only quote is not equivalent to a complete program.
Can KTL serve Utah without a local office?
Yes. KTL is based in Del Mar, California and licensed in Utah. Quotes and policy service are handled remotely by phone and email.
