Mobile Mechanic Insurance

A mobile mechanic's shop is a vehicle, which changes how the policy has to be written. Coverage has to follow you to a customer's driveway, a fleet yard, or a roadside — with garage liability that is not restricted to a fixed premises, tools coverage that works away from home, and commercial auto on the service vehicle.

  • Off-premises garage liability written for mobile operations
  • Tools and equipment covered inside the service vehicle
  • Commercial auto on the van or truck — personal auto excludes business use
  • Fleet and property manager COIs the same business day

  • Commercial Auto

  • Workers' Compensation
  • General Liability

Why a personal auto policy will not work

Personal auto policies exclude vehicles used in a business, and that exclusion applies to the van you take to every service call. One at-fault accident on the way to a job can leave the entire claim uninsured. A commercial auto policy on the service vehicle, with the tools scheduled on inland marine rather than assumed under auto physical damage, is the correct structure.

What mobile mechanic insurance costs

Mobile operators usually pay less than fixed shops for premises exposure and more for auto. Ranges below reflect a typical one-van operator without employees.

CoverageTypical annual premium
General / garage liability $1M/$2M$900–$2,200
Commercial auto, one service van$1,800–$4,000
Tools & equipment, $15K–$30K limit$300–$700
Workers' comp (per employee added)$2.50–$6.00 per $100 payroll

Working on customer vehicles away from a shop

The moment you have the keys, the vehicle is in your care. If you road test, move a car, or keep it overnight at your home for parts, you need garage keepers even without a lot. Many mobile mechanics carry a modest limit — $25,000 to $50,000 — which covers a single vehicle claim without pricing in shop-sized lot exposure.

Fleet accounts, apartment complexes, and COIs

The most profitable mobile work — fleets, dealerships, apartment communities, delivery contractors — requires a certificate before your first invoice. Expect requests for $1M/$2M liability, $1M commercial auto, workers' comp, additional insured status, and a waiver of subrogation. KTL issues those certificates the same business day for existing clients so you never lose an account to paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Rarely. Most personal carriers will not endorse a service vehicle used for repair work; when they do, the limits are too low for fleet accounts. Commercial auto is the standard answer.
