Two policies, two very different claims
Professional liability answers an allegation that your treatment plan caused injury — an aggressive progression that re-tore a repair, a modality applied to a contraindicated patient, delegation to an aide beyond their scope. General liability answers the patient who trips over a resistance band or is struck by a dropped weight. Clinics that buy only one of the two find out which one they needed at claim time.
Typical physical therapy insurance costs
Individual PT professional liability is one of the least expensive licensed-clinician policies. Clinic programs cost more because they add premises, equipment, payroll, and often multiple treating clinicians.
| Profile | Professional liability | Package/BOP |
|---|---|---|
| Individual PT (employed or per diem) | $150–$400/yr | n/a |
| Mobile / home-visit PT practice | $600–$1,400/yr | $700–$1,500/yr |
| Clinic with 3–10 staff | $1,500–$4,000/yr | $1,800–$4,500/yr |

Abuse and molestation coverage for hands-on care
Manual therapy, dry needling, and pelvic-floor work create allegations that most general liability forms exclude outright. A sexual abuse and molestation endorsement provides defense and limits for those claims, and referral sources such as school districts, senior living communities, and hospitals increasingly require it by name on the certificate. Chaperone policies and documented consent for sensitive treatment areas also lower your exposure.
Mobile PTs, home visits, and auto exposure
If your therapists drive to patients, personal auto policies exclude business use and your general liability will not respond to an at-fault accident. Hired & non-owned auto is inexpensive and closes the gap; therapists carrying equipment should also confirm inland marine limits cover tables, laser, and ultrasound units away from the clinic premises.
Contract and credentialing requirements
Payer credentialing, hospital contracts, and school-district agreements have standard insurance exhibits. Most ask for $1M/$3M professional liability, $1M/$2M general liability, the contracting entity as additional insured, a waiver of subrogation, and 30 days' notice of cancellation. KTL matches the exhibit and returns the certificate the same business day.
